As a Security Officer at Adapt, Darren Crouch ensures that staff and clients feel safe, supported, and welcomed. He’s a problem-solver, a helping hand, and a steady presence for those who need it. “I approach my work with an openness, knowing that I could end up in uncomfortable situations,” Darren shares. “I always try to disarm people with kindness.”
Darren played a key role in establishing security at the Roseburg OTP, remaining there for six years. Initially, many patients were hesitant about security due to past experiences with law enforcement, but Darren’s fair treatment, empathy, and willingness to help changed perceptions. “Patients now see security as valued employees they can come to in any situation because they are comfortable with us,” he says.
His dedication extends beyond his job description. From assisting clients with personal care to ensuring clients in distress have support from both clinical and security staff, Darren steps in wherever help is needed. “We have patients who arrive soiled and need help getting dry clothes on – I’ve assisted them without hesitation,” he says. “I used to be a caregiver, so doing things like that doesn’t bother me.”
Darren’s impact reaches far beyond security. He has helped our incredible Safety & Security Team create an agency-wide atmosphere of trust and support for patients in need. “I present myself as non-threatening and approachable to anyone that comes here. I’m willing to go above and beyond what is required of me,” he explains. Whether guiding a lost visitor, maintaining the facility, or simply offering a friendly presence, Darren’s actions reflect his commitment to Adapt’s mission.
Reflecting on his eight years at Adapt, Darren finds inspiration in the transformations he’s witnessed. “I’ve seen clients arrive with nothing, and through the program, they turn their lives around. Seeing them years later when they’re married, with kids, and owning a home is incredibly inspiring,” he shares.
