Mental Health Therapist

Shawn Sorensen earned an AA/OT at Southwestern Oregon Community College in College in Coos Bay, Oregon. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. He completed a Master of Social Work with a 4.0 GPA from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon with a concentration on Clinical Social Work.

Shawn began his career in behavioral health in the fall of 2020 working as a counselor in Opioid Treatment Programs in Medford and Portland. During his MSW program, Shawn would then gain experience working as a counselor in a residential setting with clients with co-occurring disorders who were involved in the criminal justice system in Portland, Oregon. He also gained additional experience completing his advanced field placement training in an outpatient Addiction Medicine program in Vancouver, Washington where he worked with both individuals and family members.

Shawn has been supporting clients in our North Bend Outpatient location since 2023 in both Mental Health and Substance Use treatment services as the Mental Health Therapist. Shawn provides individual and family therapy sessions and facilitates an Early Recovery Skills Group. Shawn is also able to provide co-occurring services in treatment clients navigating mental health and substance use complications. Shawn is bilingual and can read, write, speak Spanish with proficiently.

Shawn’s clinical experience includes providing therapy to individuals, family members, and group facilitation. Shawn’s educational background in Psychology and Social Work along with his work experience services to integrate psychological theories with the social systems approach of social work to address individuals’ challenges holistically, provide clinical interventions across systems, and strive to build rapport and empower individuals to navigate systems, overcome barriers, and achieve personal growth.

He strives to provide individuals and families with a safe, supportive space to explore and challenge themselves, fostering meaningful change to build resilience and navigate life’s challenges. Guided by a humanistic and existential framework, Shawn aims to empower clients to discover purpose, meaning, and fulfillment in their lives.
