Spotlight On: Empowering Youth for Mental Wellness

The challenges that children and teens face today can feel overwhelming at times. From academic pressures and social dynamics to family stresses and anxieties about the future, young people are navigating a complex world. Providing them with tools to effectively cope with life’s challenges is one of the greatest gifts we can give the next generation. Consider these six key strategies to empowering youth with healthy coping skills:

1. Model and discuss coping strategies. Children and teens learn by watching the adults around them. When you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, talk through the coping techniques you use like deep breathing, going for a walk, or calling a friend. Identify the emotion you’re feeling and explain why your chosen strategy helps.

2. Encourage creative outlets. Activities like art, music, writing, and dance allow youth to process and express their emotions in a healthy way. Provide tools like journals, art supplies, or instruments and designated spaces for them to pursue these expressive outlets.

3. Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness helps reduce stress and increase self-awareness. Try guided meditations, body scans, and other mindfulness exercises together. Apps and videos can provide easy instructions.

4. Role play scenarios. Act out how to respond to different stressful situations using coping skills like positive self-talk, visualizing a calming place, or doing muscle relaxation techniques. Praise their use of healthy strategies.

5. Schedule self-care. Just like homework or chores, build routines that make self-care a priority like going for a walk, taking a bath, or reading something uplifting each day. Make relaxing activities a scheduled habit.

6. Identify distractions. When intense emotions arise, provide a list of go-to distractions like playing a game, dancing around, or hugging a pet. Changing their environment can provide a mental reset.

The key is making coping skills second nature through repetition and creating a safe space for youth to express what they’re feeling. With healthy strategies reinforced, they’ll be resilient for life’s challenges.
